Pediatric Dentistry
In Austin, Texas
The dental care routines children are taught at a young age provide the foundation they need to keep their teeth and gums healthy for a lifetime. In addition to at-home dental care, Dr. Holley also recommends several preventative steps be taken to stop common pediatric dental problems before they start.
The First Dental AppointmentA child's first dental visit should take place around age one. This timing is important so Dr. Holley can identify any risk for baby tooth decay, as well as ensure that his or her overall dental health is in good condition. After the initial visit, we recommend that each child has his or her teeth professionally cleaned and examined every six months. |

Preventative Services
For most children we recommend applying sealants to the teeth and an occasional fluoride treatment. Sealants, which are placed on the surface of teeth, are very important because they fill in the tiny crevices and cracks where cavities tend to take hold. Sealants also protect the teeth from daily exposure to the plaque and acids that cause tooth decay. It's important to maintain six month check-ups to monitor the integrity of the sealant.
Fluoride is also an important element in pediatric dentistry because it strengthens the tooth enamel. If the water supply where you live doesn't provide the amount of fluoride needed, you should contact us to schedule a fluoride treatment for you and your children.
The Right Diet for Healthy Teeth
Any family or pediatric dentist will tell you that eating snacks and food containing high sugar content increases a child's risk for developing cavities. This is because snacks with large amounts of sugar are usually digested in the mouth for long periods of time and increase the amount of plaque that is deposited on the teeth. To keep your children's teeth healthy, you should encourage them to eat nutritious snacks such as vegetables, fruits, and low-fat yogurt or cheese.
